11/25/2007 | Don Mason | outstanding | Just returned from two tank cenote cavern dive at Chikin Ha near Playa del Carmen in Mexico. Trip made as a from-ship excursion package which was a little to hustle-bustle for me, but still a great time. First cavern dive ever. Water temp was 76 degrees in fresh water and 78 degrees below the salt water halocline. Braking through the halocline was a trip. Visibility was outstanding. Formations were unremarkable but overall experience makes up for it. Guide (Candy) was wonderful. Biggest problem with experience was suiting and gearing up and then having to walk about 200 meters downhill to water with an uphill return. Don't try it with a bad knee. Facilities at Chikin Ha are primative but sufficient. bring your own water and food. Would recommend trip to anyone looking for something different to add to their log book. |
